A Mammogram is an x-ray picture of the breast. It can be used to check for breast cancer in women who have no signs or symptoms of the disease. It can also be used if you have a lump or other sign of breast cancer. It uses low-dose x-rays to detect cancer early – before women experience symptoms – when it is more treatable. Mammogram is a key element in the early diagnosis of breast cancer.

Important things to know about Mammogram:

1. Early detection of breast cancer reduces risk of dying from the disease. Women should undergo Mammogram yearly at age 40, or earlier if they’re at high risk.

2. Mammography procedure takes about 20 minutes and discomfort is minimal for most women. The procedure is safe and there is very tiny amount of radiation exposure from a mammogram.

3. Digital Mammogram is advisable to use especially if you have dense breasts or are under age 50. A digital mammogram is recorded onto a computer so that doctors can enlarge certain sections to look at them more closely.
